Angela Ahirwe is a talented and dedicated GVU volunteer with a passion for helping others and making a difference. Born in Uganda and raised in the Bay Area, she brings creativity, positivity, and a strong work ethic to every project. Her energy, enthusiasm, and commitment make her an invaluable member of the GVU team.

Action Committee Member

Angela Ahirwe was born in Kampala, Uganda, and spent much of her childhood visiting relatives in villages like Sogolelo, where she saw firsthand how limited educational opportunities were for many. She attended boarding school in Uganda and cherishes memories of cooking outdoors with her family, playing with cousins, and listening to the grownups’ stories as they waited for meals to cook.

Angela came to the United States in 1998 at age 10, joining her mother who had moved ahead to care for a relative and start a new life. Adjusting to American life presented challenges, including understanding the fast-paced English she heard daily, but she worked hard and quickly adapted. She also discovered simple joys, like having as much bread as she wanted—a rare treat in Uganda. Though an only child, she has embraced the Ugandan community in the Bay Area and cherishes her cultural roots.

From a young age, Angela loved drawing and dreamed of a career in fashion, despite encouragement to pursue nursing or medicine. She earned a Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Fashion Design and later chose a flexible career path to allow for travel. Today, she works as an HR Generalist while exploring more portable opportunities.

Angela is married to George Ahirwe and has been involved with GVU since its early days after meeting founder Suzan Rickett. Known for her bright smile, positivity, and willingness to help in any way possible, Angela’s energy and dedication have made her a driving force for GVU’s mission.
